PASTOR'S WIFE AND CHILDREN LOST IN FIRE

It was a lamentable moment yesterday for the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) Otumara Warri Delta state as fire engulfed their parish house and sent the pastor's wife and about 4 children to the great beyond. The incidence happened while the Pastor was away for a meeting in Osun state. The fire outbreak was said to have been caused by faulty electrical cable at around 12:30 am in the area. All rescue efforts proved abortive due to the great iron protectors in the house.
The inferno completely destroyed the mission house as well as part of the main church building of the church, destroying properties estimated at millions of naira reported sunnewsonline

LOCUS STANDI: A HINDERANCE TO THE VIGILANT

PRITCHARDS O. OSARIEMEN (LLB UNIBEN)

Introduction
The right of the complainant to institute court proceedings, locus standi, is one of several consideration of the appropriateness or inappropriateness of the subject matter of litigation for judicial consideration. Any question of justiciability is addressed by the court before it proceeds to a consideration of the merits of any claim. Thus, locus standi is a condition precedent to any hearing of an alleged cause of action. The term locus standi denotes legal capacity to institute proceedings in a court of law and is used interchangeably with terms like “standing” or “title to sue”.1 It had also been defined as the right of a party to appear and be heard on the question before any court or tribunal.1 It is the “the right or competence to institute proceedings in a court for redress or assertion of a right enforceable at law”.1 It has also been stated that a party prosecuting an action would have locus standi, where the reliefs claimed would confers some benefits on such party.1
In this work, the writer undertakes to analyze the practice of locus standi in Nigeria, and the need for judicial and legislative intervention with a view to reducing its harshness.
The doctrine of locus standi over the years had been a major concern in the consideration of the merits of plethora of cases in Nigeria. At this, one would wonder whether Nigerian courts that preach against the sacrifice of justice on the altar of technicality are only paying lip services.

CIGARETTE- THE KILLER ROD (A MOST READ!)

Researchers have revealed that tobacco smoking and inhalation produces a life of slavery, as well as a host of chronic, debilitating illness and ultimate death. It is sad but true that "As little as one cigarette a day, or even just inhaling the smoke from someone else's cigarette, is enough to cause a heart attack and even death", warns a report from the US Surgeon General Dr. Regina M Benjamin. Half of all long-term smokers die of tobacco related death. Staying where cigarette is smoked is dangerous, hence, no safe level. It is discovered that in every eight seconds, a human life is lost to tobacco.

HUGE SOLAR FLARES ADVANCING THE EARTH

I read a post by NASA this morning of a massive flare rocking its way to the earth and it may constitute a communication problem, please read on:
An extreme solar flare is blasting its way to Earth and could mess up some power grids, satellites and radio transmissions, scientists say. It’s been several years since Earth has had a solar storm of this size coming from sunspots smack in the middle of the sun, said Tom Berger, director of NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colorado.Solar storms happen often, especially during peaks in the solar cycle, and don’t directly harm people. But what makes this one more worrisome is its location on the sun along with its strength, he said. “There’s been a giant magnetic explosion on the sun,” Berger said. “Because it’s pointed right at us, we’ll at least catch some of the cloud” of highly energized and magnetized plasma that can disrupt Earth’s magnetic sphere, which sometimes leads to temporary power grid problems. Forecasters don’t yet know when Wednesday’s solar storm will arrive here and which part of the planet will be facing the sun and bear the brunt of the effects. It could arrive as early as Thursday morning or may take a few days. Berger said scientists will have a better idea after they get more satellite data. The first part of the storm, which arrives in only a few minutes, has already affected radio transmissions. It can also damage satellites. The flare is considered “extreme” on forecasters’ scale, but just barely so, Berger said. On the plus side, sun flares expand the colorful northern lights so people farther south can see them. Accuweather.com astronomer Hunter Outten predicts the radiation could fire up the famous northern lights so much that they’re visible in Canada and northern parts of the United States rarely treated to such views.

WEARING SUNGLASSES- A FASHION OR A PROTECTION

When it comes to the use of sunglasses and lenses, some today may still see it as a fashion trend. This is not a new campaign however, for the use of glasses but a product of the latest research on vision care and eye exposure to radiation. From the study a great nexus was found between glass wear and vision protection. The research as published in the journal JAMA OPHTHALMOLOGY is as follows:
Where you live, how much time you spend in the sun and whether or not you wear sunglasses or not may all indirectly contribute to your risk of glaucoma and cataract over the course of a lifetime, according to new research. All of these factors may increase the likelihood of exfoliation syndrome (XFS), the leading cause of secondary open-angle glaucoma and increased risk of cataract complications. XFS (also known as pseudoexfoliation syndrome) produces white flecks on the lens, which can lead to a blockage of the trabecular meshwork. While the majority of cases of XFS are known to be associated with mutations in the LOXL1 gene, the underlying mechanisms of the condition remain poorly understood.
Previous studies had shown that environmental factors also played a role, but detailed studies of lifetime exposure to sunlight had not been evaluated. In the recent study, nine institutions in the US and Israel looked at a total of 185 subjects with XFS over the age of 60, and 178 control subjects. By looking at where the participants lived and providing a weighted average value for solar exposure over a lifetime, the researchers were able to gather data on the link between sunlight exposure and the risk of XFS. The study found that, averaged over a lifetime, each additional hour spent outdoors in the summer increased the risk of XFS by 4%. In the US, participants who wore sunglasses during summertime over their lifetime saw their risk of XFS drop by 2%, and those working over water or snow were also at increased risk – there were too few participants in the Israel study with history for analysis. There was no association between wearing a brimmed hat and XFS. “Lifetime outdoor activities may contribute to XFS,” said Dr Louis Pasquale, lead author and director of the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Glaucoma Center of Excellence. He explained: “The association between work over snow or water and the lack of association with brimmed hat wear suggests that ocular exposure to light from reflective surfaces may be an important type of exposure in XFS etiology.” Dr Pasquale added: “If confirmed in other studies, there could be reason to consider more widespread use of UV-blocking eyewear to help prevent XFS.”

ZEISS LAUNCHES CATALOGUE OF NEW LENSES

Zeiss has launched an updated prescription catalogue, which contains product and sales information valuable during the dispensing process. The new catalogue includes all the product additions and lens solutions introduced in the last year, Zeiss Digital Lenses and the latest Zeiss Sport Lens portfolio expansion. Following the range extension to the Zeiss Sport Lens portfolio and the introduction of a 1.67 index within the single vision material offering, the company announced a further extension, making all Zeiss progressive and Digital Sport Lenses available in a 1.67 hi-index material. The addition was designed to provide practitioners with the ability to meet patient demand for more aesthetically pleasing and cosmetically appealing, thin and light lens options for high wrap frames. Zeiss Sport Lenses with the freeform design, incorporate the specific frame wrap angle as a parameter for each individual lens design to compensate for aberrations, resulting in individual vision optimisation. The new catalogue has been designed to allow practitioners to navigate and find all the information they need with ease, enabling dispensers to use it as a singular reference point and sales support aid to demonstrate the benefits of different lens designs to patients. Carl Zeiss Vision marketing and communications director, Peter Robertson, said: “Taking into consideration our customers’ feedback, we also refreshed the content and created a new version for iPads, as more and more practitioners are using tablets during the dispensing process.” For more information, visit www.zeiss.co.uk/better-vision

BOKO HARAM HAS DONE IT AGAIN

Thousands of fear-stricken residents in several towns and villages in Nigeria's northeast Adamawa state have fled their homes after troops failed to retake a major town seized by Boko Haram militants, residents said on Saturday. Residents of Madagali, Gulak and Michika towns and nearby villages fled their homes on Friday through Saturday following a Boko Haram advance after repelling a military offensive to retake Madagali town, seized by the militants last month. "All the residents of Madagali, Gulak and Michika have fled their homes to the mountains and Mubi town after soldiers retreated from Madagali where they made a failed attempt to push out the insurgents and the recapture the town," said Bello Alaramma who also ran away from Gulak to Mubi, 76km away. "Boko Haram are now in control of Gulak," headquarters of Madagali local government (municipality) in Adamawa state, Alaramma said. Defence headquarters spokesperson, Major General Chris Olukolade, declined to comment on Boko Haram seizure of more towns in the region. Residents of Gulak became apprehensive when troops drove into the town in vans, trucks and armoured cars firing shots in the air in retreat after they were overpowered by the militants in Madagali, 20 kilometres away, said Ayuba Daniel, a Gulak resident.
