A death sentence was handed down to a Mauritania blogger, Mohamed Cheikh Ould on Wednessday by the high court in the country. The sentence was based on an article of his, which he titled, "Religion, religiosity and craftsmen" . In the article he critized the CASTE SYSTEM and said the followers of Islam interpret the religion based on circumstances. The article was published on Dec. 31 2013. This led to his arrest in January 2, 2014.
Though Mohamed claimed to have repented and said he do not mean to insult Prophet Muhammad, the court proceeded to sentence him to death on Wednesday based on the charge of apostasy.
Meanwhile the Committtee to Protect Journalist CPJ has called on the authorities to ensure that the sentence is reversed and his safety is granted:
"We call on authorities in Mauritania not to carry out this sentence," said Sherif Mansour, CPJ's Middle East and North Africa program coordinator. "Mohamed Cheikh Ould Mohamed should be freed and his safety protected."
